Ann Hampton Callaway launched a new series of live radio programs, This Is Cabaret, at Birdland, with a most appropriate first guest, Steve Tyrell. Tyrell, one of today’s most prominent cabaret artists was introduced by Callaway, then sang the number he performed when inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame, “Fly Me to the Moon.” The two chatted about Tyrell’s beginnings in the Brill Building, with amusing stories about Carole King, Gerry Goffin and Neil Sedaka.

The musical portion of the program began with Tyrell swinging “The Way You Look Tonight,” following his recollection of how he accidentally began his career as a singer by performing that Jerome Kern/Dorothy Fields song for the soundtrack of the 1991 movie Father of the Bride.” He the did another Fields (written with Jimmy McHugh) number, “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” which he sang in the sequel, Father of the Bride Part II. The always-marvelous Callaway joined Tyrell for a very romantic “The Very Thought of You.” Tyrell’s stories about working with Burt Bacharach and Hal David led into a duet with Liz Callaway of “I Say a Little Prayer.” Ann amazed and delighted by taking six phrases provided by the audience and doing her composing-on-the-spot routine resulting in “Here’s to Steve Tyrell.” The program closed with Tyrell’s moving rendition of “Stand by Me.”
