Linda Purl entered wearing a stunning form-fitting sea-green dress with blue waves in the pleats. Attention was turned quickly, however, to her stunning voice on her opener, “I Feel a Song Coming On.” Her jazzy take on it created an upbeat atmosphere in the room. Bart Howard’s “Let Me Love You” was presented with a moving, gentle touch.
Her show centered around songs one might hear during the heyday of New York nightclubs. It was a pleasure to hear the seldom-performed verse to the one specific New York song in the show, “Autumn in New York.” Her love for songs of this era came from listening to albums from her parents’ record collection. Those songs represented a world where adults seemed to have it all together, according to her patter. Her songs illustrated her point made later on that, now that we are the adults, it’s apparent we don’t have it all together.
Gregory Harrison joined her for a delightful duet on “Oh Me, Oh My.” Tedd Firth, imported from New York, was sublime and as Purl commented, “Tedd plays the subtext of lyrics.” In a touching encore, she sang a contemporary song, “This Time Tomorrow,” for her son, Lucius, about to go off to college.
