Impresario Scott Siegel brought eight of today’s best cabaret and Broadway performers to 54 Below to pay tribute to Frank Sinatra. Siegel provided an interesting and amusing comment before each of the 15 carefully chosen songs.
Jack Noseworthy opened appropriately with “Come Fly with Me,” followed by 17-year-old Giuseppe Bausilio nicely doing the novelty “The Coffee Song” (“They’ve Got an Awful Lot of Coffee in Brazil”). Todd Murray did two songs that are owned by Sinatra, “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and “One for My Baby (and One More for the Road).” Danny Gardner had the SRO crowd cheering by singing and tap dancing through “On the Sunny Side of the Street” and “Where or When.” Douglas Ladnier brought the right emotion to “Body and Soul” and “Softly, As I Leave You.” Tom Wopat’s mellow baritone worked well with “I Get Along Without You Very Well (Except Sometimes)” and “But Not for Me.” There were standout performances by Kendrick Jones and Sal Viviano. Jones’s two dance numbers, “Just in Time” and “The Best Is Yet to Come,” displayed his truly amazing ability on a dance floor. Viviano closed the show by best capturing the Sinatra essence with his two iconic songs: “It Was a Very Good Year” and “My Way.” Ian Herman provided excellent accompaniment for each vocalist.
