She is bombastic, boisterous, bold, sometimes belligerent, often beguiling, but always Molly Pope. Pope is a force of nature that appears at The Duplex the second Friday of every month. You never know what she will do on stage, but it is always great fun to watch her. She has the remarkable ability to suddenly end a hilarious comedy routine and instantly shift gears and sing a tender ballad.
The show opened with a loud and lively “Dark Horse” followed by “Can You Picture That.” Her up-tempo “Lover, Come Back to Me” included her hilariously shouting “No wonder I am lonely.” Only Pope would dare bring a volunteer from the audience on stage to make out with, followed by a soft and tender, beautifully sung “My Ideal.” She sang “You’re Getting to Be a Habit with Me” to a glass of Hennessey, which led into a moving Stephen Sondheim medley of “Now You Know” and “Not a Day Goes By.” Noël Coward’s “If Love Were All” was performed as well as I have ever heard it done. Her finale was a Garlandishly performed “But the World Goes ‘Round.” Her first encore: a rousing “Everybody Plays the Fool”; the second, “I Can’t Give You Anything but Love,” left me thinking that there may be no better young vocalist at doing romantic ballads.
Her wild and wooly offbeat antics may not be for every one, but they have worked for me since first I experienced the amazing Molly Pope.
